Since 1998, The Society of Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy has offered prescription medication to free of charge to the underserved population of the New Orleans Community; namely the homeless, indigent and elderly-this group of individuals on a fixed income and in most cases, cannot afford needed medication prescribed by physicians. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy, which operated on donations of funds and medicines from the medical and pharmaceutical communities, non-medical and pharmaceutical businesses, and caring individuals, has filled a large and critical gap which has existed for many years, simply by providing necessary prescribed medicines for people who cannot pay. With Hurricane Katrina, and the recent economic recession that followed, the number of uninsured and working poor in the city has grown immensely. The Community Pharmacy has been recognized by the Louisiana Attorney General's office, and featured in the Clarion Herald and The Louisiana Weekly, along with nola.com (newssite). The Pharmacy is located at 1995 Gentilly Boulevard, STE C18 near Gentilly and DeSaix Boulevards. The Pharmacy provides prescription medicines free of charge to those who are unable to pay for them. The Pharmacy takes clients Mondays and Wednesdays beginning at 8:00a.m. (please arrive by 10:00a.m. to be served the same day).
